A prosecutor spent two hours Tuesday trashing reputed Philadelphia mob boss Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino as a grasping gangster who skimmed income from fraudulent prescriptions for $1,500-a-tube ache cream.
Throughout closing arguments at Merlino’s federal racketeering trial, Manhattan Assistant US Lawyer Lauren Schorr stated “the proof is obvious” that Merlino belonged to an “organized crime enterprise” that schemed with crooked sufferers, docs and pharmaceutical gross sales staff.
However she didn’t point out the gross sales rep that a mob rat testified had an affair with Merlino through the alleged rip-off.
Protection lawyer Edwin Jacobs Jr. attacked the credibility of three gangland snitches who testified towards Merlino, together with former Genovese crime-household affiliate John “Junior” Rubeo.
Final week, Rubeo surprised courtroom spectators — together with Merlino’s spouse, Deborah — together with his sudden allegation of Joey’s infidelity. “They do issues you wouldn’t contemplate doing in your wildest goals. They lack conscience,” Jacobs stated of the cooperating witnesses. “To them, the oath is a meaningless jingle.”
The jury is scheduled to start deliberations on Wednesday.
